Take the seven day

This is the single most useful thing we can tell you. A three day rental assumes you work at a steady pace for three days, and that is almost never how a house clearance goes — you will spend the first day sorting rather than loading, and you will stop to look at things.

The seven day is $30 more than the three day on every size. Extra days added afterwards are $10 each, so the seven day booked up front is cheaper than a three day plus four extensions, and it takes the clock off the job. Nobody has ever told us they regretted the extra days on a house they were emptying.

Sizing a full house

Household contents are bulky rather than heavy, which means volume decides the container, not weight.

For a small house or an apartment, a 20 yard. For a full family home with decades of contents, a 25 yard, and it is worth being honest with yourself about how much is in the attic and the garage. Furniture in particular eats space without troubling the weight limit — sofas, wardrobes, bed frames and mattresses take up far more room than they weigh.

If it is genuinely borderline, take the larger one. A second delivery costs considerably more than the $80 step up from a 20 to a 25.

Mattresses at no extra charge

A lot of companies surcharge for mattresses and box springs, or refuse them outright. We do not, and on an estate clearance that matters — there is usually more than one bed in the house.

Appliances are mostly fine as well. The exception is anything containing refrigerant — fridges, freezers, window air conditioning units — which has to be evacuated by a certified technician before disposal. Call us and we will explain how to handle it.

What cannot go in

The things that turn up in nearly every estate clearance and cannot go in the container: paint and solvents, chemicals and pesticides, propane tanks, car and household batteries, tires, and anything with refrigerant in it.

Concrete, dirt and fill are out too. Garages tend to hold most of this, so it is worth setting a corner aside for the things that need separate disposal before you start loading. If you are unsure about an item it takes one phone call — far cheaper than a contamination fee, which the landfill passes straight through.
